What Is OIT?
Early in 1992 the department
of Computing Resources
became the Office of Information Technology. What's in a
name? In this case, we
wanted to indicate to everyone on campus that we felt
that our mission and function
had expanded beyond the
traditional view of computing
to encompass new technologies and new information
management responsibilities.
\ year later, under the
leadership of Dr. Burl
Henderson, Associate Vice-
President for Information
Technology, we find ourselves
involved in numerous facets of
the emerging and exciting
worid of transmitting and
processing information in the
Nineties. With the cooperation and advice of the
University's Information
Technology Committee which
has representatives from many
segments of UTSA, we are
planning for the next generation of student computing, of
campus-wide information
systems and similar new

global scale, accessing data
and other resources from a
staggering range of archives
and libraries, etc. But
studying and preparing for
the future implementation
and management of these
resources is only the
background for what we
hope to achieve in OIT.
Our mission is to support all
of the strategic goals and
initiatives of the University
and to make available to all
members of the community
the best possible technological environment to support
their work. We would like
to provide access to facilities
that are flexible

needs of each
class, each
student, each

classrooms, networking on a

The last year has been a very
special time for us in the
Office of Information
Technology! The project
that we have all worked
toward so diligently is on its
way to becoming a reality.
You've known from the
workmen who have shifted
your desk and bookshelves
around and disrupted your
telephone service for a
(hopefully) short time, and
installed a strange plug in
your wall, that something
was happening. That wall
plug will connect your
personal computer to the
campus-wide fiber-optic
network. And during the
summer, if you are going to
be around, an Information
Technology employee will
