UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT SAN ANTONIO-THE ROADRUNNER An internal newsletter for faculty and staff Vol. 1 No. 4 September 7, 1973 from the president Since the last issue of "The Roadrunner" we have had the pleasure of a visit from Dr. L. Harlan Ford, Assistant Commissioner for Teacher Education and instructional Services, Texas Education Agency. Commissioner Ford has expressed satisfaction with the progress of our Certificate Programs in Teacher Education and has offered us I the assistance of his office. Elsewhere in this issue Dean Michel addresses this topic in more detail. Based on comments from students, faculty, and staff, I believe that we can consider Summer 1973, our first academic effort, a success. As a final proof, it produced for the President's office a cacerola of chicken mole from a satisfied student from Eagle Pass - Mrs. Enriqueta Olivares. I express my appreciation to all of you for the long hours and hard work that went into Summer 1973. Based on the Registrar's report of August 27, it appears that our Fall enrollment will be greater than Summer I. A number of courses closed during pre-registration and we had formal requests from students to open new sections. This we were able to do in large part, but of course we face practical limits in terms of classrooms and faculty. I am looking forward to a busy and productive Fall Semester. Peter T. Flawn news notes AS OF SEPTEMBER 1ST all UTSA employees are eligible to receive Workmen's Compensation Insurance benefits if disabled as a result of the performance of duty. Through this program all reasonable medical treatment and hospitalization costs incurred by an employee as a result of an employment associated illness or injury will be paid by the university. Weekly compensation benefits during confinement are included in the insurance plan. Disabled personnel are eligible for benefits of Workmen's Compensation Insurance whether or not they maintain other illness and/or accident insurance policies unless those policies themselves carry compensation restrictions. VERTICAL FILE news notes The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has granted administrative approval of UTSA's graduate Certificate Programs in Teacher Education. Dr. Joseph Michel, Dean of the College of Multidisciplinary Studies expressed his pleasure over the approval. "We are very pleased to have been certified so soon after application," he said. "This approval will affect basic courses in teacher education. Authorization allows us to prepare students for certification in teacher education, and we are now in a position to recommend teachers for certification. The certification involves eight programs of specialized teacher education at the graduate level. In addition to approval for general elementary and secondary education programs, certification encompasses bilingual- bicultural concentration at both the elementary and secondary levels; reading concentration, elementary and secondary,'kindergarten and elementary endorsement; elementary early childhood concentration; administrative, middle management and superintendent; and supervision. announcements PHI BETA KAPPA MEMBERS who would like to join the San Antonio Association of Phi Beta Kappa or who would like to be placed on the Association's mailing list should contact Ms. Irene Scharf, Academic Library, St. Mary's University, 2700 Cincinnati, San Antonio, 78284. Her phone number is 433-2311, ext. 595. The San Antonio Association will hold its Founders' Day Banquet in December. ■DMHHinBHHHHnHi
