MINUTES OF MEETING
OLMOS DAM STUDIES
31 AUGUST 1977
1. A meeting was held at the Fort Worth District Office on 31 August 1977
to present r esults of studies on Olmos Dam to representatives of the City
of San Antonio and the San An·tonio River Authority . Represen tatives in

2. Mr. Denys welcomed the San Antonio visitors and stated that this was
a follow- on meeting of the one held on 23 February 1976 . At the prior
meeting the Fort Worth DistricL (FWD) agr eed t o undertake ce rtain studies
relating to the impact of the proposed Olmos Dam modification on downstream
ch ~~nel rectification. One of the purposes of the studies was t o determine
whether there would be a Federal interest in participation in the proposed
modification. Mr . Denys expressed interest in the status of
City planning relating to modification of the dam considering information
provided to Col. Wall during a r ecent visit to San A.~tonio . I t was his
understanding that design work was complete and SARA was ready to start
construction on the darn.
3. Mr. Pfeiffer advised that they have a des i gn contract with the firm
Hensley-Schmidt , Inc . (in joint venture with W. E. Simpson Co . , Inc . ) for
OJ.mos Dam and re1ated work. Simpson is doing the road ~vork and HensleySchmidt
the dam. Considerable progress has been made on the by-pass road
location which will be just below the toe of the dam. Ot her des i gn work
ie just getting star·ted . They are anticipating a grant from the Economic
Development Agency (EDA) for partial funding; however, it has not b een
r eceived yet . In r esponse to questions~ Hr. Pfeiffer and l1r . French indicated
the~ a requi~eme nt f or a s tilling basin was still under debate. Top of tne
new weir would be at elevacion 728, which would be above the 100-year f lood .
The new design will permi t operation with all gates closed .
