Board Candidates in Harlandale and San Antonio School Districts
QUESTIONS TO STATE LEGIS LA TORS
1. Human Development Fund
In the process of creating the Human Development Fund for education and job training iniatives for
San Antonio, C.O.P.S. and Metro Alliance learned that at the state level, economic development is
seen narrowly, ie. Sports facilities, amusement parks, arenas. We learned that there was no
legislation that would allow the investment of a sales tax for a fund for education scholarships, early
childhood education, after school programs, literacy, and long term job training.
Question: Will you take the leadership to not only support Alliance Schools,
but take the lead in the next session to pass the necessary legislation so that San
Antonio can be the first city in the country to create a Human Development
Fund from our sales tax?
2. Living Wage
For a family to provide a strong and healthy household envirorunent for their children, they need to
be paid a living wage and not poverty wages. Starwood Corporation is asking for a $15 million
package for a parking garage and tax abatement for their proposed Convention Center Hotel. In
return, our families deserve to earn a wage of at least $8.50 that would put them at the federal
poverty level.
Question: Will you sign in support of a living wage floor of $8.50 per hour for
all Sheraton Hotel Convention Center Hotel workers?
