About this collection

The twenty-three river authorities in the state of Texas are public agencies established by the state legislature and given authority to develop and manage the waters of the state. These authorities are given powers to conserve, store, control, preserve, utilize, and distribute the waters of a designated geographic region for the benefit of the public.

Created in 1937 as the San Antonio River Canal and Conservancy District to develop a barge canal from the Gulf Coast to the city of San Antonio, the functions of the San Antonio River Authority have expanded to include planning, managing, and implementation of water related programs in Its jurisdiction of Bexar, Wilson, Karnes and Goliad counties.
