He found Republicans sharing San Antonio’s political stage with the once-dominant Democrats; the “old guard, minor league” business leadership replaced by dynamic major corporate executives, and an ethnically integrated social scene. The former ambassador, U.S. Chief of Protocol and head of the United States Information Agency also comments on the flowering of non-Catholic churches in San Antonio and the representational leadership at City Hall that came with single-member City Council districts in the 1970s.
