Description	San Antonio, Texas James Theodore Escobedo’s father sharecropped with mules near Elmendorf in the early years of the 20th Century, but drought drove him to take his family on Texas’ migrant trail -- picking cotton on the South Plains and pecans in the Hill Country. Escobedo recalls picking 1,000 pounds of cotton daily as a teen-ager crawling on his knees to spare his back. He later spent 40 years working at Kelly Field, leaving his youth as a migrant worker alive only in memory.
