1899
,
talks
about
her
childhood
living
eight
miles
from
town
,
mid-way
between
Weimar
and
Schulenberg
. She
walked
to a
one-room
schoolhouse
,
starting
school
at
age
seven
and
leaving
at
age
twelve
when
she was in the
3rd
grade
. She
helped
her
family
raise
their
own
food
,
picked
and
chopped
cotton
on her
father’s
105
acre
farm
.
Addie
discusses
social
activities
such
as
attending
church
and
neighborhood
parties
and
tells
of
medical
treatment
for
appendicitis
and
pneumonia
.
Later
,
Addie
worked
in
dry
goods
store
and
met
her
husband
,
Julius
, at a
dance
in
Schulenberg
. They had
no
children
of their
own
, but
when
Julius
was
65
and
Addie
was
61
, they
took
in her
sister’s
three
boys
after
both
their
parents
passed
away
. Also
included
is
a
story
about
a
road
boss
and an
explanation
of this
system
of
appointing
an
individual
as
road
boss
who
was
responsible
for a
particular
area
of
roads
.
