Exploration and Evidence
By John L. Davis
This thought-provoking book has
three concerns: it collects some of
the more controversial stories of Old
World explorers- Chinese,
Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans,
Vikings, Africans-who may have
come to Texas before A.D. 1520; it
analyzes the nature of an explorer,
what he does and how he is
different from settlers and emigrants;
it questions what is truth, and
evidence, and proof.
Scheduled for publication winter 1984.

old butter churn, watch corn being
ground on a Mexican metate!

I is really only because of our
talented volunteers that The
nstitute of Texan Cultures is able
to reach so many people with its tours,
special programs, library services,
educational programs, and its many
and varied products! This year more
than 300 trained volunteers known as
the Alliance serve as guides,
interpreters, library assistants,
salespersons in the Institute Store,
postpersons in The Institute's turn-ofthe-
century Post Office, and
representatives of the educational
prograTs at schools, civic and study
groups, and senior citizen centers.
Intensive month-long training classes
are held twice each year, and monthly
update meetings and tours are
conducted for all volunteers. Besides a
remarkable learning experience and the
opportunity to give invaluable service
to the community and state, Alliance
membership offers all the same benefits
as the Institute Associates, which
include discounts on all products,
exciting travel opportunities and
invitations to every exhibit opening
and special event.
The Ambassadors are a unique and
challenging part of The Institute-a
growing group who can be outreach
volunteers in their own communities.
They search for artifacts, act as talent
scouts for our Folklife Festival, spread
the word at local civic and service
clubs about our many activitiestraveling
exhibits, Heritage Tours,
publications, audiovisuals, research
library-in short, they are our Pied
Pipers, the Institute Ambassadors.
