photographic credits. Many are
accompanied by a "comprehensive"
study guide: a printed booklet that
contains all of the above material
plus learning activities, vocabulary
lists and other teacher's aids.

In 1554 three Spanish ships laden
with gold, silver and other
treasures encountered a
treacherous storm at sea and
sank. This story is told in three
parts, focusing on the historic
voyage, the shipwreck and the
survivors' struggle in the New
World, and finally, the excavation
and the process used to restore
the 400-year-old artifacts that

"Don Pedrito Jaramillo:
Folk Healer"
Thousands of people each year
make a pilgrimage to this folk
healer's gravesite in south Texas.
Candles and herbs with his
likeness are sold in pharmacies
and grocery stores across the
state. He was not considered a
saint by the Catholic Church; but
for almost a hundred years,
people have believed he had the
power to heal the sick. This
program investigates the
conditions in south Texas at the
turn of this century that
encouraged the belief in folk
healing - "curanderismo." The
study guide encourages students
to become "investigative
anthropologists" by providing
exercises and activities that teach
