en el Campamento 2 de Octubre
Iztacalco, Mexico, han hecho
un llamamiento p~blico de so­lidaridad.
El Campamento 2 de Octubre
es una colonia ocupada por
familias probres que tomaron
las tierras hace m£s de 17
anos. Este acto desesperado
fue motivado por la gran fal­ta
de viviendas en Mexico y
el amontonamiento en las
ciudades de campesinos y
obreros sin empleo.
Las familias del Campamento
han resistido muchos ataques
sangrientos del gobierno.
Ante la valiente resisten­cia
de los colonos, el PRI ha
tenido que recurrir a otros
m~todos para destruir el Cam­pamento.
Uno de estos m~todos es el

del FBI en El Centro, Cali­fornia
y mat~ a dos agentes
antes de suicidarse. Amigos
de James Maloney, dijeron a
la prensa que los hab!a ma­tado
porque el FBI "era una
gran parte de los opresores."
La clase trabajadora bien
sabe que la polic!a no nece­sita
escusas para atacar a
obreros en huelga. Ahara
estarln terrorizando a los
obreros agr!colas en Cali­fornia
para vengar la muerte

PERSPECTIVA FEMENIL ·La Asistencia PUblica
~ - La mayor1a de las personas que re-ciben
asistencia p~blica son mujeres
con . hij os dependientes; "de modo que la
cuestion de asistencia p~blica es una
causa de mujeres. Como hay tantos mi­tos
y mal entendimientos acerca de
este tema, PERSPECTIVA FEMENIL decica­ra
las siguientes dos columnas a 1a
desmistificacio'n de la asistencia pti­blica
y sus efectos sobre mujeres como
trabajadoras.
El Sistema de Asistertcia P~blica
vino del Acta del Seguro Social de
/ 1935. Esta Acta resulto por la pre-sibn
de hombres y mujeres de la clase
trabajadora por medio del movimiento
de uniones de los 1930s. Los trabaja­dores
sab{an que con el triunfo de las
huelgas de los sindicatos, sus traba­jos
no estar{an asegurados si miles de
personas desempleadas ~stuvieran dis­puestas,
debido al hambre y la deses­peraciO'n~
a trabajar por salarios muy
bajos.
Por otro lado, el congreso vio a
la asistencia pDblica como un m~todo
para la pacificaciO"n de una creciente
poblacion sin empleo. Una poblacitn
que exigiera trabajo y comida por me­dias
de protestas y disturbios. Fue
entonces que el congreso decidio apro­bar
un plan de asistencia m{nima para

familias, conocido como AFDC.
Muchos trabajadores, mal guiados
por los medios de comunicacicfn y otras
fuentes, ven al sistema de asistencia
como una ayuda a gente que no quiere
trabajar y que prefieren_ ser manteni­das
por lo~ que s{ trabajan.
Ademas, se piensa que los recipien­tes
viven mejor que la gente con tra­baj
OS.
Pero la realidad es que los traba­jadores
que reciben Asistencia P~blica
no reciben suficiente dinero para cu­brir
lo que cuesta vivir.

Una familia de dos solo recibe $86
por mes, una familia de tres recibe
$116, una familia de cuatro recibe
$140. Texas, que es uno de los esta­dos
rna's ricos en recursos naturales,
estf en el 47° lugar en pagos de asis­tencia.
Obviamente, es una experien­cia
humillante tratar de vivir con los­beneficios
de la Asistencia P~blica.
La creencia popular es que hombres
y mujeres que reciben asistencia no
quieren trabajar. La realidad es que
· / . / solo cuando uno de los padres esta
deshabilitado, puede la familia reci­bir
asistencia. Cuando no es cuestion
de deshabilidad, solo hogares con un
padre o madre y con hijos menores de
edad, califican para el programa. A
menudo, esto significa que si el hom­bre
no puede encontrar trabajo, tiene
que dejar a su familia para que ellos
califiquen para el programa. Para una
mujer, si su esposo la deja con 2 o 3
hijos, y si ella no puede encontrar
trabajo o una- guarder{a i~fantil, se
ve forzada a recurir al estado para
que pueda darle de comer a sus hijos.
~ I La mayor1a de hogares con solo un
adulto, son encabezados por mujeres--­mujeres
que por lo general no tienen
una buena educacibn, ni entrenamiento
ni buen trabajo.
La cuesti6n de la Asistencia PJbli­ca
es bien complicada y provoca muchas
preguntas: ~Por que no proporcionan
trabajos, entrenamiento y guarder{as
en vez de unos meros 86 0 116 dolares
al mes? lPor que es que el trabajo de
criar a nuestros hijos vale tan poqui­to?
lPor qu/ es qu~ las mujeres son
forzadas a quedarse en la asistencia
ptiblica para que no pierdan los bene­ficios
de Medicaid (Seguro de salud)?

Nicaragua: Despues de mas de 50 anos de sufrir humillaci~n y explotacion bajo
el regimen de Anastacio Somoza, el pueblo nicaraguense finalmente ha triunfado.
Despues de una larga lucha dirigida por el Frente Sandinista de Liberacion
Nacional (FSLN) y de muchos sacrificios, el pueblo nicaraguense esta constru­yendo
un ·nuevo pa{s.
Observadores temen que Somoza y sus amos dentro del gobierno de E.U. planneen
el sabotage del nuevo gobierno nicaraguense para as{ poder instalar otro
regimen como el de Somoza.
Sergio Ram{rez Mercado, uno de los l{deres de la nueva junta establecida para
guiar a Nicaragua, ha hecho una advertencia a Somoza ~ sus seguidores para que
no intervengan en el proceso de reconstruccion.
Dallas: El gobernador de Texas Bill Clements se ha rehuzado a comentar sabre
reportes que el equipo que ha causado el derrame de aceite en el Golfo de
Mexico fue manufacturado defectuosamente y vendido a Mexico por su compan{a.
El gobernador Clements es dueno de una compan{a mul~i-millonaria que vende
equipo petrolero a compan{as petroleras de E. U. y tambi~n a Mexico y otros
pa{ses.
Reportes indican que el desastroso accidente petrolero en Mexico fue causado
por unas v~lvulas defectuosas en el equipo que se instalo en ese ~zo. Todo el
equipo fue vendido a Mexico por la compan{a de Clements~ Clements ha admitido
esto perc niega saber nada sobre los defectos del equipo.

El mes pasado, en esta columna,
dijimos que explicar{amos el signifi­cado
de colonialismo y c6mo se
menifiesta en la vida diaria.
El proposito del colonialismo es
causar distorciones de la realidad,
confusion y enajenacion, por lo tanto,
no . es un proceso facil de comprender.
Colonialismo es el resultado
di recto de 1 a _ dominacion de un
pueblo--con su propia cultura, iden­tidad
y dignidad---por otro, con otra
cultura.
El pueblo que domina (m~s bien,
los gobernantes del pueblo coloniza­dor),
impone y declara como superior
su cultura (lenguage, historia, rela­ciones
sociales), con la intencion de
abolir con la resistencia del pueblo
dominado.
Claro, el pueblo dominante tamhi~n
controla las tierras del pueblo do-.
minado; impone sus leyes y cortes
para defenderlas; las escuelas solo
ensenan los avances y la historia,
los puntas de vista de la cultura
dominante.
Y durante este proceso, siempre
habri gente que se asimilari a la cul­tura
dominante--este es el proposito
espec1fico del proceso llamado co­lonialismo.
De enajenar a la qente,
de hacerlos que se olviden de la cul­tura,
incluso a que formulen una / nueva-para que mas tarde, cuando a la
cultura dominante le canvenga, usen
la 11 nucva cultura11 para mantener
dividido atin mas tiempo al pueblo
dominado--queriendo siempre encontrar
nuevas formas de prolongar su domina-­cion
y explotacion de los recursos,
tanto naturales como humanos, del
pueblo y territorio dominado.

y brincan de una cosa a otra,

Estas son algunas de las manifesta­ciones
mas peligrosas para el pueblo
dominado, ya que sirven los intereses
de una pequena minor1a de ricos indus­triales
aliados a jefes militares.
·El pueblo mexicano en los E. U.no es
el unico que sufre los efectos del co­lonialismo.
En AmJrica Latina, en
Africa, en Asia y en el Medio Oriente,
hay millones de seres humanos victi­mados
y divididos por el colonialismo.
La manera mas efectiva de combatir
estos y todos ataques contra los po­bres
y trabajadores, esta en la unidad
de los pueb-los oprimidos y lasolidari­dad
entre ellos ante toda agresion.

• Que Significan? 1 I I I
Varias fechas en la historia del pueblo mexicano sobre­salen
orgullosamente. Estas fechas simbolizan una tradi­cion
de resistencia y lucha aun ante tremendos obstaculos.
Dos de estas son el 16 de septiembre y el 29 de agosto.
El 16 de septiembre de 1810 comenzo' el levantamiento
contra Espana. El 29 .de agosto de 1970 fue la primer pro­testa
masiva por mexicanos en los E.U. contra la guerra
en Vietna'm.
La larga y sangrienta lucha por la independencia de
Espana demostro el valor y la determinacion del pueblo.
Cansados de sufrir injusticias a manos de los espafioles
el pueblo mexicano lucho y libero a su patria. ·
Obviamente el pueblo hizo el error de permitir que el
triunfo fuera logrado por burgueses (terratenientes y
negociantes ricos) mexicanos. As{ fue como explotadores,
respaldados por la burguesia de E.U., entre al poder y el
pueblo en Mexico hoy contintia sufriendo explotacion.
Ei 29 de agosto se comemora el aniversario del Morato­ria
Chicano contra la guerra en Vietnam. Ese d{a mas de
25,000 mexicanos participaron en una protesta masiva en
Los Angeles contra la agresion de E.U. contra Vietnam.
La polic{a ataco/ a los manifestantes hiriendo a varios
y asesinando a Ruben Salazar. El gobierno exij{a que mu­ri{
ramos en Vietnam pero nos negaba el derecho a expre­sar
nuestra opinion.
Durante esa guerra, como en guerras anteriores, los
mexicanos sufrieron el porcentaje mas alto de muertes y
heridos que cualquier otro grupo etnico en E. U.
Estas y muchas otras injusticias causaron que la gente
finalmente se uniera en opo~icion en contra de-la agre­sion
que sufr1a Vietnam.
Las injusticias que a~n sufren hoy todos los mexicanos
en E. U., sea cual sea su ciudadan1a, requiere el mismo
esp{ritu de resistencia y lucha.
Nuestra lucha requiere hoy mis sacrificios ya que al
aumentar nuestra fuerza, el gobierno esta~ reclutando y
preparando ciertos individuos para presentarlos como
nuestros 'l{deres.' Estas son personas que el gobiern.o
considera domesticadas para poder depender en ellos.
Estos individuos nos traicionaran facilmente.
Al unirnos a comemorar el 16 de septiembre y el 29 de
agosto, debemos tener claro su significado en nuestro
pasado y nuestro futuro.
La mejor. manera de comemorar esas dos fechas es unien­dose
a la lucha por la unidad de todos los trabajadores y
en contra las injusticias y la explotacion.

Recientemente Paul Thompson, un
columnista del News, escribio que el
abogado Pete Torres fue padre de un
nino y la madre lo llevo/a la corte
(ella noes la esposa de Pete). Thomp­son
dice que trat~/ cia comunicars~ con
Torres y que, ·· a . pesar de que el se en­co
·u'l:raba en su oficina, Torres no
quiso contestar el tel~fono.
Pete Torres mando una carta a cada
miembro de los medias de comunicacion
incluyendo a Thompson, para aclarar su
posicion. En la carta dice que el
News tiene un doble estandard, uno
para los angles y uno para los mexi­canos.
Los mexicanos siempre son cri­ticados
negativarnente mientras que los
anglos son intocables.
En su carta el da ejemplos:
El alcalde republicano McCallister,
cuya esposa se encontraba en su cama
de muerte, mientras que el andaba cor­tegeando
a otra mujer; el abogado rico
Jack Gunther de San Antonio, quien fue
encontrado culpable en Houston de es­tafar
gasolina y de fraude; el consejal
John Steen, cuyo hijo fue institucion­alizado
por lo.s efe.ctos de la droga
"Angel Dust."
Aun cuando el Sr. Torres no dio los
nombres, Su Servidora sabe a quienes
se refer{a.
Es bien conocido que el News-Express
no da tiempo igual a la gente que ata­can.
La pol{tica de ellos es de ven­garse
de toda persona que este en con­tra
del GGL y los contratistas.
Pete Torres corri~ contra el GGL y
los contratistas y gand--~sera por eso
que el News-Express lo atacan?
La Camara de Comercio, que en su
mayor{a son contratistas y del GGL y
han mantenido sumisos a las "minor:las"
por mas de 25 anos, han pagado por la
publicacion de un articulo en Dun's
Review, edicion de julio. Describen
a la mano de obra como "libre de sin­dicatos"
y barata, con gente que son
"entrenables." Que a los mexicanos se
les paga muy poco en esta ciudad, no
es nada nuevo--}os mexicanos son paga­dos
como 300 dolares al mes menos que
en Houston o en Dallas. Es hora que
hagamos algo para resolver este serio
problema.
El consejal Bernardo Eureste y el
Gerente Municipal Tom Huebner est{n
peleando de nuevo, (a Huebner le gusta
pelear con mujeres tambien). Huebner
dijo que Eureste trato/ de influenciar
a un miembro del perBonal de la ciudad
para que reocupara a personas que ha­b{
an side despedidas por haber dado
testimonio a favor del exconsejal Rudy
Ortiz y eso es contra el Reglamento de
la ciudad.
Su Servidora fue una asistente en
el Ayuntamiento par 3~ anos y se que a
Huebner siempre se le ha dicho por los
miembros del concilio a qui~n ocupar y
a quien desocupar.
La abogada Jane Macon fue ocupada
porque es amiga pol.{tica de la alcal­desa.
Sam Granada (ex Gerente Munici­pal)
fue rebajado en grado y luego
despedido por Tom Huebner porque era
amigo de Charles Becker y su grupo, y
la alcaldesa Lila Cockrell junto con
otros, quer{an despedirlo.

HOY MAS QUE NUNCA,
EL PUEBLO DEBE EX/STIR
Todos entendemos la necesidad de tener un periodico pro­gresista
independiente. Todos queremos saber la verdad de
cada evento importante.
Sin embargo, para que un periodico independiente como
EL PUEBLO prospere, tiene que recibir el respaldo de todos
de acuerdo con sus habilidades.
La urgencia de reportar y analisar eventos importantes
con una perspectiva obrera se convierte mas cr{tica segun
se empeora la econom{a en E. U.
Los ricos que dominan el gobierno y controlan-la prensa
comercial continuaran su auto-propaganda. Aumentaran su
auto-propaganda por medio de analizadores de la pol{tica,
comentadores, politiqueros y otros sirvientes de ellos.

What Do They Symbolize?
Several dates in the history of the Mexican people stand
out proudly. They signify a proud tradition of resistan­ce
and struggle against great odds.
Two of these dates are September 16 and August 29.
September 16, 1810, was the beginning of the uprising
against Spain's colonization of _Mexico. August 29, 1970,
was the first massive protest by Mexicans in the U.S.
against the Vietnam War.
The long and bloody struggle for independence from
Spain demonstrated once again the courage and determina­tion
of the Mexican people.
Tired of suffering injustice~ from Spaniards, the
Mexican people struggled and liberated their country.
Obviously a mistake was made afterwards in letting the
rich class control the country. Th~s lead to control by
rich exploiters supported by the U. S. and today Mexican
workers continue suffering exploitation.
August 29 .commemorates the anniversary of the Chicano
Moratorium against the Vietnam War. qver 25,000 Mexicans
participated in a massive demonstration in Los Angeles
protesting U. S. agression against Vietnam.
The police attacked the protestors injuring hundreds and
killing Ruben Salazar. The government wanted us to die
in Vietnam but denied us the right to express our opinion.
Throughout the Vietnam War, as in previous wars,
Mexicans suffered the highest number of death and wounded
than any other ethnic group in the U.S.
This and other injustices eventually unified mqst people
in opposition to the war.
The injustices and exploitation faced today by Mexicans
in the U. S., regardless of their citizenship, call for
the same spirit of resistance and struggle.
Our struggle calls for greater sacrifice. The govern­ment
is busy recruting and grooming individuals to make
them our 'leaders.' These are persons whom the government
considers 'safe' and who will easily betray us.
As we commemorate Aug~st 29 and September 16, we must
be clear on their signif{cance to our past and_ our future.
The best way to honor those two dates is by joining in
the struggle for the unity of all working ,people against
injustice and exploitation. -

Recently, Paul Thompson, a colum­nist
for the News, wrote that attorney
Pete Torres had fathered a child and
had been taken to court by the mother
(not Pete's wife). Thompson stated
that he had tried to contact Torres
but even though he was in his office,
Torres would not come to the phone.
This seems very strange.
Pete Torres then sent a letter to
every member of· the media including
Thompson, to give his side. The letter
states that the ~ews has a double
standard, one for Anglos and one for
Mexicans. Mexicans are always nega­tively
criticized while Anglos are
mainly un-touchable.
In his letter he gives examples:
Republican Mayor HcCallister, whose
wife was on her death bed while he
courted a younger woman; wealthy law­yer
Jack Gunther from San Antonio who
was convicted in Houston's federal
court of a gas swindle and fraud;
Councilman John Steen whose son was
institutionalized from the effects of
"Angel Dust".
While Mr. Torres did not come right
our and give names, Yours Truly knew
who he was referring to.
It is a known fact that the News
and Express do not give equal time to
the people they blast. Their politics
is to get even with those that are
against the GGL and developers.
Pete Torres ran against the GGL and
devel~pers and won, could this be why
the News and Express attacked him?
The Chamber of Commerce, which is
made up of mostly GGL and developers
who have kept the minorities down for
over 25 years, has a story in the July
issue of Dun 1 s Review, where .they des­cribe
labor as "union free" and cheap,
with people that are "trainable." That
Mexicans are paid cheap wages in this
city is not new-- Mexicans are paid as
much as 300 dollars a month less than
in Houston or Dallas. It is time that
we did something about this serious
problem.
Councilman Bernardo Eureste and City
~anager Tom Huebner, are fighting
again (Huebner likes to fight with wo­men
too). Huebner says Eureste tried
to influence a city staff member to
rehire people that were fired for tes­tifying
in favor of ex-councilman Rudy
Ortiz and that is against the City
Charter.
Yours Truly was'an aide at City Hall
for 3~ years and knows Huebner has
always been told by council members
who to hir; or fire.
Attorney Jane Macon was hired be­cause
she is the Mayor's political
buddy. Sam Granada (ex-City ~anager),
was demoted and then , fired by Tom
Huebner because he was a friend of
Charles Becker and his group, and the
Mayor (Lila Cockrell) and others
wanted him fired.

Everyone understJnds the urgent need for an independent
progressive newspaper. All of us want to know the truth
behind each issue and important event.

from a workers' perspective becomes more critical as the
U. S. economy worsens.

Rich businessmen, dishonest politicians and hyprocritical

EL .PUEBLO UNIDO on Colonialism
Last month, in this column, we said
that we would explain the meaning of
colonialism and how it manifests .it­self
in day to day living. The purpose
of colonialism is to cause distortions
of· reality, confusion and alienation,
therefore, it is not an easy process
to understand.
Colonialism is the direct result of
the domination of a people--with its
own culture, identity and dignity-by
another people, with another culture.
The dominating people (actually,
the rulers of the colonizing people),
impose their culture (language, his­tory,
social relations) and declare it
superior, with the intent of abolish­ing
all resistance by the dominated
people.
Naturally, the dominating people
also control the lands of the domina­ted
people; they impose their laws and
their courts to defend them; the
schools only teach the advances and
the history, the points of view of the
dominating culture.
And during this process, there will
always be some folks that assimilate
the dominating cultur-e--this is the
specific purpose of the process called
colonialism. To alienate the pE·ople,
to make them forget their culture, in­deed
to formulate a new one-- so that
later on, when it is to the advantage
of the dominating culture, they can
use the "new culture" to keep the domi­nated
people divided for yet moretime­always
looking for new ways to prolong
their domination and exploitation of
the resources, both natural and human,
of the dominated people and territory.
Those that assimilate (or accept
without question) the mentality of the
colonizer, manifest it at various
levels.
-There is the extreme, that accepts
it so completely, that they reach the
point of dispising their own people.
It is from this group, from which the
colonizer chooses "the leaders" of the
dominated people.
-There are those that are apathetic,
or they say that "they're not interes­ted
in those things, that they only
want to do their jobs."
-At another level, there are those
that begin to see that there exists a
great injustice but they don't know if
it can be changed "because they (the
colonizing people) I:Iave ,everything."
"Perhaps," they say, "if we change
a few laws we can get a bigger piece
of the pie." ·
~There are those that see the
injustices, but they are confus ed due
precisely because of the effects of
colonialism, and they are not able to
clearly identify the enemy. They
wander · about in thier thoughts,
jumping around from one thing to
another "looking for their identity."
These are some of the manifesta­tions
most dangerous for the dominated
people, as they only serve t he in­terests
of a small minority of rich
industrialists allied to military
chiefs.

of human beings victimized and di­vided

The most effective way to combat
these and all attacks against the
poor and the workers, lies in the
unity of the oppressed peoples and

Most people on welfare are women
with dependent children; the wel~are
question therefore is a women's ques­tion.
Since there are many myths and
misunderstandings about welfare, PERS­PECTIVA
FEMENIL will devote the next
two columns to the de-mystification
of welfare and its effects _on women
as workers.
The W~lfare System evolved out of
the Social Security Act passed in
1935. This act was pressured into
existence by the working class men
and women through the union movement
of the 1930's. Workers knew that
with their union str-ikes won, their
jobs would not be secure if thousands
of jobless people were will~ng, out
of hunger and despair, to work for
less wages.
Congress on the other hand, saw
welfare as a method to · pacify a
growing jobless population. A popu­lation
who would demand jobs and food
through street demonstrations and
riots. Congress moved therefore to
provide a minimum plan of family as­sistance
- AFDC (Aid to Families with
lDijlj~:1!•J
Dependent Children).
Many workers, misguided by the
media and other sources, see welfare
as a handout to people who do not
want to work and prefer to be support­ed
by those who do. Furthermore,
welfare recepients are thought of as
living much · better than people who
work.
But the fact is that workers who
receive Public Assistance do not re­ceive
enough money to cover their
living expenses.
. A family of 2 receives only $86 a
month, a family of 3 receives $116, a
family of 4 receives -$140. Texas,
one of the richest ~tates in natural·
resources, ranks 47th in assistance
payments. Obviously, it is a degrad­ing
experience to make ends- meet on
welfare benefits.
Popular belief is that men and
women on welfare do not want to work.
The fact is that only when one parent
is disabled may the family receive
assistance. When disability does not
exist, only one-parent households with
minor children can receive assistance.
Often this means

leaves her with 2 or 3 children,
and she cannbt find _a job or day care,
she must turn to the state in order
to feed her children.
The majority of the one-parent
households are headed by women-­women

The issue of welfare is a compli­cated
one that raises many questions:
why not provide jobs, training, and
day care instead of a mere $86 or
$116. a month? Why is the work of
raising our children valued at so
little? Why are women forced to stay
on welfare so as not to loose Medicaid
benefits?

columns in order to clear up the

Nicaragua: ,After over 50 years of suffering exploitation and humiliation by
the Somoza regime, the Nicaraguans have finally triumphed.
After a prolonged war lead by the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN)
and great sacrifices, the people of Nicaragua are resonstructing a new nation.
However, observers fear that Somoza and his U. S. government supporters will
attempt to sabotage the new government and install another Somoza-like regime.
Sergio Ramirez Mercado, a leading member of the new five-member junta set up
to run Nicaragua. has issued a warning to Somoza and •his supporters not to
intervene in the reconstruction effort.
Dallas: Texas Governor Bill Clements has refused to comment on reports that
the equipment which caused the massive oil spill in Campech~, Mexico. was
manufactured and sold by his company although it was defective.
Governor Clement's multi-million dollar company sells oil rigs to U. S. oil
companies as well as Mexico and other foreign countries.
Reports indicate that the disastrous oil spill was caused by defective valves
on the tanks used on that oil well. The equipment used in constructing the
ill-fated well was sold by the governor's company. Clements has admitted this
but claims he knows nothing of the defects on the equipment.
So, in the final analysis. who is responsible for the disaster?

in the October 2 Settle­ment,
Iztacalco, Mexico, have
issued an urgent call for sup­port.
The October 2 Settlement
was founded by poor families
over 17 years ago. Their ·
desperate act in taking over
that land became necessary
due to the great housing
shortage and the existance of
thousands of displaced farm­workers
and unemployed
workers in the large cities.
The settlers have confron­ted
many bloody attacks by
the government.
Faced with their resistance,
the PRI regime has used other
methods to destroy the set­tldment.

REPRESSION
The leader of the renegade
group, Francisco de la Cruz
Velasco, has created confu­sion
and division.
For example, De la Cruz
mailed an open letter to
Gustavo Carvajal Moreno, the
PRI Secretary General, offer­ring
to unite the whole set­tlement
with the PRI.
This open letter, published
in EXCELSIOR newspaper, was
signed on behalf of the
Central Executive Committee
yet it had not been approved
by the Committee.
This underhanded act by De
la Cruz was publicly denounced
by Salvador Albarral Vasquez,
member of the Committee.
The tension and danger at
the settlement increases each
day.
On July 26 the president
of United Farm Workers of
America, Cesar Chavez was
here in San Antonio promo­ting
solidarity for the
strike that has been going on
in the fields of California
for the past six months.
"We count our martyrs,"
said Chavez, referring to
the murder of Rufino Contre­ras
by the police · and - the
growers' gunslingers.
Based on the experience
th<:lt they have had with boy­cotts
in the not so distant
past, the farmworkers' union
has made a public call for
support for the new boycott.
The boycott includes Chi­quita
bananas and non-union
i~eberg lettuce. ( Also, here
in~ Texas, the boycott in­cludes
all HEB stores, as
they are sueing the union in
court and have refused to
cooperate with the boycott.

An alternative school for
undocumented children has
been established in San
Antonio. It will partially
help fill the educational
needs of children who have
been rejected by public
schools.
School Opens In S.A.

of the school, told EL
PUEBLO that the school was
established because of the
great need that exists in the
community.
Thousands of undocumented
children are going without an
education as a result of the
hysterical campaign against
undocumented workers.
This campaign has failed to
mention that undocumented
workers also help finance pu­blic
schools. They pay taxes
through rents or buying homes.
The alternative school was
started during this summer
and is planned to continue
throughout next school year.
In addition to learning the
usual subjects, the children
will be taught group sociali­zation
in order to prepare
